Almost exclusive for applications involving the marine and chemical processing industries, the 400 Monel Shim Sheet is one of the better corrosion resistant alloys. The AMS 4544 Cold Rolled Plate is well received in marine environments where many conventional grades are prone to chloride ion stress related corrosion cracking.

Moreover, the JIS NW 4400 Hot Rolled Plates is also favoured in the oil and gas environments, especially for sour gas retrieval. As opposed to the more traditional steel grades, ASME SB127 Monel Alloy 400 Cold Drawn Plate thrive in sour environments. Since the alloy does not crack, the Werkstoff No 2.4360 Coils have a longer service life while offering superior performance. Another area where the ASTM B127 UNS N04400 strips deliver an amazing performance is in the petroleum industry, particularly in the alkylation units.
Typically in an alkylation unit, the Alloy 400 Sheet is in constant contact with the halide containing concentrated hydrofluoric acid, which is a very harsh corrosive acidic compound that can degrade many alloys including several grades of stainless steels and carbon steel grades. But in the case of Monel 400 Plate, the alloy is one of the rarer metals that can actually withstand corrosive chemicals such as hydrofluoric acid, fluorine, hydrogen fluoride or their derivatives.

The Monel 400 is a nickel copper alloy that performs well under acidic and chloride ion rich solutions. The material is heavier, stronger and much ductile than many other alloy metals. The federal specification of the Monel 400 is QQN281D. The DIN numbers and classes indicate the different mechanical properties such as the lengths, diameters, wall thicknesses and width of the pipes, tubes, plates and bars. The material has 8.8kg per meter cube density and minimum tensile strength at 550MPa and the minimum yield strength at 240MPa. It can withstand temperatures up to 1300 degrees Celsius. The mechanical properties slightly differ between the different classes. The selection is solely dependent on the application requirements.
